German immigration into the area following the Revolutions of 1848 in the German states brought more people, and by 1861, the settlement was incorporated as a village. Early settlers īy 1852, Wausau had been established as a town and continued to grow and mature. ![]() These were " Yankee" migrants, descended from the English Puritans who settled New England during the 1600s. Loggers came from Cortland County, New York, Carroll County, New Hampshire, Orange County, Vermont and Down East Maine in what is now Washington County, Maine and Hancock County, Maine. Word of Stevens's success in the region spread across the country throughout the logging industry. His efforts helped to establish Marathon County in 1850. By 1846, Walter McIndoe arrived and took the lead in the local business and community. Lumbering was the first major industry in this area, and other sawmills along the Wisconsin River were quickly constructed by entrepreneurs. George Stevens, the namesake of the city of Stevens Point south of Wausau, began harvesting the pine forests for lumber in 1840 and built a saw mill. ![]() Several Prairie School houses are in Wausau. This Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house is one of two in Wausau. Wausau, from Ojibwe “waasa”, means "a faraway place". By an 1836 treaty with the United States, the Ojibwe ceded much of their lands in the area to federal ownership. They named it for the long rapids in the river, which created many bubbles, called bulle in French. The area had been called "Big Bull Flats" or "Big Bull Falls" by French explorers, who were the first Europeans here. This provided a route for products from the region to the large New York and other eastern markets. The Wisconsin River first drew European-American settlers to the area during the mid-19th century as they migrated west into the Great Lakes region following construction of the Erie Canal in New York State. After the French and Indian War this trade was dominated by British-American trappers from the eastern seaboard. ![]() They had a lucrative fur trade for decades with French colonists and French Canadians. The historic Ojibwe (also known in the United States as the Chippewa) occupied it in the period of European encounter. This area has for millennia changed hands between various indigenous peoples. The original Milwaukee Road train station was used as a logo for Wausau Insurance companies starting in 1954 the logo used this angle.

A moratorium on the gas tax is not just a break for motorists at the pump, it’s a break for every Californian, at every cash register, across the state.” Supes hit brakes on opposition to initiative curbing tax hike powers “This, in turn, reduces the cost of goods to consumers at the time of purchase. “Reducing the cost of gas lowers the cost of transporting everyday goods for sellers and distributors,” the letter reads. The board argued that a moratorium on the gas tax would have a positive ripple effect throughout the local economy. “With long commutes to city centers and rural worksites, and a per capita income of just $22,092, every penny counts when making ends meet here in the Central San Joaquin Valley.” “High gas prices disproportionately and negatively impact low income, rural communities such as those in Tulare County,” the letter reads. The state excise tax on gas is currently $0.51 per gallon, which the board pointed to as hurting county residents. “At a time when California is experiencing billion-dollar budget surpluses year after year, the state has the opportunity to provide hard-working citizens a significant financial reprieve as they grapple with a forty-year high inflation rate,” the letter reads.Īccording to the county’s staff report, Californians are paying $5.76 per gallon, which comes in at $1.65 more per gallon than the national average. The Tulare County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a letter on Tuesday in support of a moratorium on the gas tax. The report outlines the huge benefits from this transformation. This means that they will optimise for minimum waste of resources in building and operating vehicles, including designing vehicle platforms with parts that are interchangeable and recyclable.” “The survival of car manufacturers will depend on building cars with long lifetimes and low operating costs. The cost of maintenance will be one-fifth the cost of current cars, the cost of finance one tenth, and the cost of insurance also one tenth. Moreover, battery technology will improve, needing to be replaced only once, and old batteries will be able to used elsewhere (in the power grid). ![]() Maintenance costs will be significantly lower – thanks to 20 moving parts in the powertrain compared to 2,000 for petrol cars – and the miles travelled significantly higher they will be doing 1.6 million km by 2030, more than five times more than petrol cars. But the depreciation costs will be minimal, because the cars, owned by fleets, will “last a lifetime”. Within few years, the upfront costs of AEVs will match those of petrol cars. ![]() Like his predictions on the rise of solar, and the sudden decline of fossil fuels, Seba’s calculations are driven by simple economics. Why is this? Because everything will be cheaper. And four times cheaper than the cost of already owned vehicles. “Basically, the day that autonomous vehicles are regulatory accepted, transport-as-a-service will be 10 cheaper than cost of new vehicles,” he says. This is going to be no different.”Īnd that change, he says, will happen on day one of level 5 autonomous EVs obtaining regulatory approval. “Every time we have had a ten x change in technology, we had a disruption. It happened with the printing press, it happened with the first Model T – it cost the same as a carriage and two horses, but offered 10x the horsepower. But what he sees in the transition to autonomous EVs from privately owned petrol cars is the same he has seen for all other major transitions: what he calls the 10x opportunity cost. Seba admits that his forecasts are hard to digest. By 2030, 40 per cent of cars will still be privately owned, but they will only account for 5 per cent of kilometres traveled.Īutonomous cars will be used 10 times more than internal combustion vehicles were, they will last longer – maybe one million miles (1.6 million km) – and the savings will inject an additional $1US trillion into the pockets of Americans by 2030. Seba does not say that individual car ownership will completely disappear. Indeed, there are some people who are starting to anticipate this change, considering Australian-based business models and even local manufacturing, such as t hose revealed on Monday by Michael Molitor, the head of a new company called A2EmCo. “Furthermore, the disruption will start in cities with high population density and high real estate prices – think Sydney and Melbourne then Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide – and quickly radiate out to the suburbs, the smaller cities, and then rural areas.” “And this is going to happen despite governments, not because of governments. So yes, this applies to Australia,” Seba tells RenewEconomy. The report, by RethinkX, an independent think tank that focuses on technology-driven disruption and its implications across society, says this stunning and radical will be driven entirely by economics, and will overcome the current desire for individual car ownership, starting first in the big cities and then spreading to the suburbs and regional areas. Or getting a free ride because the local government has decided to make transport easier. Imagine, for instance, paying a token sum for a ride into town after buying a latte for $4.50. The provision of this service may come virtually free as part of another offering, or a corporate sponsorship. It’s the death spiral for cars.Ī major new report predicts that by 2030, the overwhelming majority of consumers will no longer own a car – instead they will use on-demand electric autonomous vehicles.īy 2030, within 10 years of regulatory approval of autonomous electric vehicles (A-EVs), the report says, 95 per cent of all US passenger miles traveled will be served by on-demand, autonomous, electric vehicles that will be owned by fleets rather than individuals. Transport-As-A-Service will use only electric vehicles and will upend two trillion-dollar industries. By 2030, you probably won’t own a car, but you may get a free trip with your morning coffee. 3/31/2023 0 Comments Coronavirus total lockdown lessons![]() The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is of a magnitude most individuals today have never witnessed.
